Abstract

We have observed polarized two photon absorption of naphthalene molecule doped in a single crystal of durene at low temperature. The spectrum for the first singlet excited state of naphthalene consists of a lot of vibronic transitions due to vibronic coupling with ``U” type vibrations in the excited state. In order to determine the nature of the vibronic transition the detailed polarization measurements have been done using three different crystal faces of durene in which naphthalene molecules are well known to have suitable orientations. The most important vibronic transition in the spectra was found to have mixed polarizations involving at Least two kinds of intermediate states. The preliminary analysis shows that the prominent intensity giving state should be of $B_{2u}$ symmetry and the other should be of $B_{1u}$ symmetry. The detailed analyses are in progress. Polarization experiments using two light beams with different wavelengths and polarizations will be done.
