Abstract

Colophon: This portfolio was printed on Rives Heavyweight mould-made paper on a Vandercook No. 4 Proof Press. The seven four- and five-color reduction woodcut portraits wre produced by successively cutting away portions of each woodblock's surface after each color was printed, repeating this process for each portrait, cutting and printing until very little of the woodblock surfaces remained. Robert Tauber, formerly the director of Logan Elm Press & Papermill, the Arts-of-the-Book Laboratory at The Ohio State University, designed and printed this portfolio, composed the text in Adobe Minion, an original typeface designed by Robert Slimbach, and made the portfolio cases by hand. The text was printed from photopolymer plates made at Boxcar Press. James L. Battersby, Professor Emeritus of English at The Ohio State University, has published extensively on 18th-century literature and criticism, the works of Samuel Johnson, and modern critical theory. Sidney Chafetz, Professor Emeritus of Art at The Ohio State University, has produced an extensive body of work as a printmaker, including numerous portraits of authors and cultural icons. Acknowledgement is made to Harry Campbell, The Ohio State University Libraries Special Collections Conservator, and to the staff at OSU's Collection Maintenance and Conservation department for their advice and support. Special thanks to Joseph Branin, Director of The Ohio State University Libraries, who with the publication of this portfolio, has taken the lead in reviving the Logan Elm Press, an imprint that flourished at OSU from 1978 to 1995. Of seventy-five numbered and signed copies of 7 Poets, this is copy number .
