Abstract
The multiplets In the vibrational exciton spectra of $\alpha$ resorcinol crystals are resolved at low temperature and the polarization properties are determined. The crystal transitions are classified into the symmetry species of the $C_{2v}$ factor group with transition moments directed along the crystal axes. The intensity patterns in the factor group components of molecular vibrations, in crystal are correlated with the symmetry species in the free molecule. Implications of this correlation on vibrational assignments will be discussed.
