Abstract

Limited Plasma Emission Spectrometry of marine and fresh-water cherts from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia indicates the method can be used to identify and source some cherts utlized by prehistoric inhabitants of the region. Specifically, lithic material from the Late Woodland Saddle Site and Middle Woodland Bluebird Site, Marshall Co., West Virginia, formerly confused with the marine Brush Creek chert of the Burning Springs Anticline can now be identified with fresh-water chert from the Upper Washington (Dunkard) limestone, which outcrops much nearer the sites in question.
