Abstract

The absorption spectra of methylene chloride $(CH_{2}Cl_{2})$ has vibrationally structured absorptions in the 50 000 to 90 000 $cm^{-1}$ spectral region. The 1400 {\AA} absorption band is reported to be the most highly structured with low resolution $instrumentation^{1}$. These closely spaced absorptions are assigned in terms of $C - H$ and $C - Cl$ symmetric stretching modes. The corresponding spectrum of $CD_{2}Cl_{2}$ is utilized to aid in the assignments. Several differences are noted in the spectra of the two compounds.
