Abstract
Strong uv fluorescence form electron beam excited $Ar/He/F_{2}$ or $Cl_{2}$ gas mixtures has been observed. This radiation is attributed to optical transitions of electronically excited $F_{2}$ and $Cl_{2}$. Molecular fluorine emission is dominated by a broad continuum $(\Delta\lambda \sim 600${\AA}) centered at $\sim 3025$ {\AA}; also, intense fluorescence at 3365 and 3575 {\AA} was discovered. In contrast, clear vibrational structure in the $Cl_{2}$ uv band was evident. Peak emission occurred at 2575 {\AA} and the excited molecular state vibrational spacing was determined to be $\sim150~cm^{-l}$. Utilizing either HC l or $Cl_{2}$ as the chlorine donor yielded identical uv spectra, reinforcing the assignment of the radiation to excited $Cl_{2}$. Excimer formation kinetics in $F_{2}$ and $Cl_{2}$ and their application to prospective halogen ultraviolet lasers will be discussed.
