Abstract

This research project aims to study how interior design can make learning in school more engaging and inspiring for children through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) education and the principles of biophilia. My research project is a continuation of my capstone speculative STEAM alternative school & robotics maker space for children ages 5-13 in Franklinton, Ohio. The artistic process embedded within STEAM learning increases student engagement and interest. Biophilic design provides an innate connection to nature which has been proven to increase mental and physical well-being. I plan to research how, when applied to an interior space, the principles of biophilia can heighten the learning experience of children in a STEAM-based learning environment. More specifically, I would like to discover the influence of biomorphic forms and patterns, especially fractals, in interior spaces on their users. Additionally, I would like to discover the ideal fractal dimension range to implement fractal designs into an interior environment to maximize the benefits of biophilia. The second topic my research covers is STEAM Education. I would like to discover how to create an interior space that is conducive to STEAM learning. One of my goals in researching STEAM education is to establish a clear definition of STEAM and explore how it differentiates from similar educational frameworks. Within this goal, I aim to identify the needs and key ideas of STEAM learning that can empower students through the built environment.
