Abstract
The vibrational frequencies of cellulose were calculated in the single chain approximation, using force constants which were iteratively adjusted to obtain a best fit to infrared and Raman data from both published and unpublished spectra. Emphasis was given to the ``planar’’ vibrations and to the polarization data. Good agreement between calculated and observed frequencies was obtained using only 18 modified valence force constants. Regression analysis showed that a number of other initially assumed force constants were unnecessary. Present address of H.L.
