Knowledge Bank

Lines in the (3,1) band of the $B3\Pi 0+$ - $X1\Sigma +$ system of IC1 have been recorded in absorption using a Fabry-Perot interferometer spectrometer. A striking increase in line-widths is observed for transitions ending on excited-state rotational levels above J^{\prime} = 37. Examination of the probable causes of the broadening in the spectrum points to shortened excited-state life-times and yields $3\times 10-11$ sec. for the life-time of $I35$C1 in the $J\prime =41$ level. The predissociation responsible for this short life-time l be discussed.
