Abstract
Tinnitus, or the perception of sound in the absence of an external acoustic stimulus, is a widely investigated yet elusive phenomenon. However, much of the research surrounding tinnitus focuses on the concept of neural plasticity, or the ideology that the brain is a dynamic, malleable entity capable of adaptation based on internal and external input. This review will utilize neural plasticity as a framework to explore proposed peripheral and central mechanisms of tinnitus, as well as current trends in tinnitus treatment methodology.
