Abstract
Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS) has been shown to be a powerful technique for probing concentrations and temperatures in sooty combustion systems. However most of these results have been derived almost entirely from the vibrational spectra of molecules. A new approach to CARS diagnostics is the utilization of the pure rotational spectra of such molecules. The advantage of this method over vibrational CARS include: (1) All molecules of interest have their rotational spectra within the frequency range of one dye; (2) the rotational cross sections are generally larger and the lines narrower; (3) in principle a wider range of temperatures can be determined; (4) temperatures and concentrations maybe simultaneously obtained in a single laser shot. In this presentation we will show spectra and results in pure gases and mixtures at various temperatures and in gases within laboratory flames.
