Abstract

Infrared measurements have been made of the frequency and intensity of the $C-D$ stretching motion of $CDCl_{3}$ in various solvents. The correlation found by $Tamres^{1}$ between integral heat of solution of chloroform in various solvents and the shift of the O-H stretching frequency of methyl alcohol in the same solvents does not extend to the frequency of the chloroform C-D stretch. There is, however, a correlation between the heat of solution and the integrated intensity of this C-D band. The band is twenty times more intense when chloroform-d is dissolved in acetone than when it is dissolved in carbon tetrachloride. The relation between the infrared spectral properties of chloroform and hydrogen bonding will be discussed.
