Abstract
Resonance fluorescence in the $B^{3}\Sigma_{u}^{-}$ - $X^{3}\Sigma_{g}^{-}$ system of gaseous $S_{2}$ has been excited by atomic line radiation. The Zn I line at 3075 {\AA} overlaps either the $P_{1}(41)$ or $P_{3}(41)$ absorption line of the (4, 1) band; the fluorescence back to the X-state is observed extending to $v^{\prime}^{\prime} = 23$. Zero field level crossing (Hanle effect) studies on the excited level, together with the g value appropriate for a Hund’s case (b) $^{3}\Sigma$ state, yield a life-time of $15 \pm 3$ nsec for B $^{3}\Sigma$. The quoted uncertainty reflects an estimate of the experimental errors plus the ambiguity in the assignment of the excited level quantum number.
