Abstract

The $\nu_{3}$ band of $CH_{4}$ has been reinvestigated with a four-pass grating spectrometer having a spectral resolution of $0.018 cm^{-1}$. By use of the deconvolution procedure of Jansson et al.,$^{1}$ nearly all of the fine structure components in the P. Q. and R branches have been resolved out to J - 13. Comparison of the data with the theory of $Hecht^{2}$ gives an average deviation between calculated and measured fine structure splittings of $0.008 cm^{-1}$ for J $<$ 10.
