Abstract

Raman spectral studies of aqueous ethylene glycol containing chlorides of Group II metals reveal varying degrees of interaction. In particular, the spectrum of ethylene glycol undergoes significant changes upon addition of $CaCl_{2}$ or $ZnCl_{2}$. The changes are consistent with conversion of the glycol from trans to gauche form and chelation of the metal ions.
