Abstract

Colophon: Handset and printed at The Logan Elm Press & Paper Mill, the Arts-of-the-Book Laboratory of The Ohio State University College of the Arts, Department of Art Education. The paper was handmade at the press in the traditional Japanese method using gampi and abaca fibres. Gampi (Wikstroemia canescens) is a strong bast fibre (inner bark), requiring careful cooking & gentle handbeating; it grows wild in Japan, where it has been used as papermaking fibre since the ninth century. Abaca (Musa textilis - also called manilla hemp), the strongest, longest hemicellulose bast fibre, is grown in the Philippines mainly for cordage and textiles. It hydrates quickly & is very low in shrinkage, but requires careful initial beating to prepare the fibre for papermaking.
