Abstract

Doppler-free laser spectroscopy has been carried out on a beam of metastable c(2p) $^{3}\Pi_{u} H_{2}$ molecules. Laser transitions to the 3s,3d, $^{3}\Sigma ^{3}\Pi$, and $^{3}\Delta$ states have been detected via the quenching of the metastable by such transitions. The line-widths of the transitions are a few MHz allowing clear resolution, and relatively precise measurement, of the fine structure of the. 3S, 3d complex. The results interpretation of the fine structure measurements will be discussed.
