Abstract

The Raman spectra of powdered crystals of $Na^{+}$, $K^{+}$, $Rb^{+}$, $Ag^{+}$ and $NH^{+}_{4}$ $IO^{-}_{4}$ (all Scheelite structures) have been obtained at room temperature and at $\sim80^\circ K$. Polarization analyses of single crystals of $NaIO_{4}$ were used to assign the vibrational symmetries. The intermolecular forces in Scheelite-type crystals have been interpreted on the basis of dipole-dipole interactions between $anions,^{1}$ and alternatively in terms of a coulombic $model.^{2}$ In this paper the results of the periodate spectra will be presented, and conclusions drawn regarding the dominant interactions in this series of crystals from the analysis of the $IO^{-}_{4}$ vibrations.
