Abstract

Sin UV lines from an argon ion laser were used to study the laser induced fluorescence of the sodium molecule. The spectra, recorded in the second order of a half-meter spectrometer (1180 grooves/nm grating), show about 200 fluorescence lines. There are four R-P series and five Q series which we assign to the C-X system of Na2. One of these originates at a very high vā€²ā€˜ ground level (vā€²ā€˜=17) and shows emission almost exclusively on the blue side of the laser line. While the X state constants1 reproduced energy levels very precisely, the C state constants2 do not seem to do so, except for very low v^{\prime} and J^{\prime} levels. We will briefly discuss the spectra, the C1Ī u constants, the fluorescence intensities, and the behavior of the transition moment for the C-X system of Na2.
