Abstract

The magnetic rotation spectra of $SO_{2}^{16}$ and $SO_{2}^{18}$ have been observed at high resolution in the region 3100 - 3000 {\AA}, and the rotational structures of several bands have been examined. The analyses indicate that alternate $K^{\prime}$ levels are missing in each band studied. This result, together with the isotopic variation of rotational constants, suggests that the excited state is a linear $^{1} B_{1}$ component of a Renner-split $^{1} \Delta_{g}$ state, the other component of which is the $^{1} A_{1}$ ground state.
