Abstract

The three Herzberg systems of absorption band of oxygen in the region of $40 000 cm^{-1}$ correspond to orbitally forbidden transitions to the states $c^{1}\Sigma_{u}^{-}, A^{\prime}{^{3}\Delta_{u}}$ and $A^{3}\Sigma_{u}^{+}$ from $X^{3}\Sigma_{g}^{-}$. These transitions acquire their intensity from allowed transitions by spin-orbit coupling. This study is concerned with (a) the representation of the branch intensities of recent $observations^{1}$ of these forbidden bands by a set of transitions moment parameters, and (b) the relation of these transition moments to these of the allowed transitions through the spin-orbit matrix elements. $^{1}$B.
