Abstract
The torsional spectra of $CH_{3}CH_{3}, CH_{3}CD_{3}$, and $CD_{3}CD_{3}$ have been observed in the gas phase under high pressure x path-length conditions (30-70 atm, meters). From the frequencies of the observed fundamentals and ``hot'' bands the values of the rotational barrier parameters $V_{3}$ and $V_{6}$ have been calculated. Various mechanisms which may be responsible for the appearance of the torsional spectrum will be discussed. Present address of G. E.
