Abstract

Using a He-Ne 50 mw laser as exciting source, the Raman spectra of the $S_{2}^{=}, S_{3}^{=}$ and $S_{4}^{=}$ were obtained from powders of the $Na_{2}S_{2}, SBa_{4}, Na_{2}S_{4}$ and $BaS_{4}\cdot 2H_{2}O$ salts. Solutions in water and ethyl alcohol were also studied. Infrared spectra of nujol mulls of the above salts were obtained with Beckman IR-11 and IR-12 spectrophotometers. The results were interpreted in a straight-forward manner, $S_{3}^{=}$ being bent $(C_{2v})$ and $S_{4}^{=}$ a nonplanar chain of $C_{2}$ symmetry.
