Abstract

Using a He-Ne 50 mw laser as exciting source, the Raman spectra of the S2=,S3= and S4= were obtained from powders of the Na2S2,SBa4,Na2S4 and BaS4⋅2H2O salts. Solutions in water and ethyl alcohol were also studied. Infrared spectra of nujol mulls of the above salts were obtained with Beckman IR-11 and IR-12 spectrophotometers. The results were interpreted in a straight-forward manner, S3= being bent (C2v) and S4= a nonplanar chain of C2 symmetry.
