Abstract

A Photoelectric Raman Spectrograph is described which gives Raman spectra with a speed, accuracy, and sample volume approaching that associated with infrared spectroscopy. The instrument employs a unique optical system which offers more than ten times the light gathering power of previous designs. This system includes a novel image slicer to permit the use of an unusually high entrance slit, a two-grating twin-slit double monochromator, and a chopped-light photometric system which retains the stability characteristic of ac amplification systems, but avoids the loss in light customarily occurring at the chopper. A cosecant bar grating drive provides accurate counter readings of frequency difference. Performance of the instrument is illustrated by complete spectra scanned in five minutes on various samples having a volume of 0.25 ml. It is shown that sample preparation is simplified with this instrument since the background arising from Tyndall scattering by suspended particles in the sample is eliminated by the double monochromator.
