Abstract
This paper addresses the relationship between Crown and Parliament in the period following the crisis of 1339-1341. It lays out how Edward III's political adjustments made in response to the rise of the Commons as a coherent political institution were critical in laying the financial foundation which funded the English victories against the French in the 1340s and 1350s. It then argues that existing secondary sources give too little credit to the novelty and tactfulness of Edward's strategic maneuverings in determining the English success in the first phases of the Hundred Years War, as well as ensuring the long-term financial stability of the Crown.
