Abstract
The microwave spectrum due to the most stable conformer of methyl glyoxal. $(CH_{3}COCHO)$ has been assigned. This conformation has a planar frame-work in which the two carbonyl groups are positioned trans to one another. Internal rotation splittings in the vibrational ground state have been analyzed, yielding a value for the barrier to internal rotation of the methyl group. Furthermore, rotational transitions in excited states of the two lowest vibrational modes, the C-C torsion and the methyl torsion, have been identified. A search for the microwave spectrum of the less abundant cis conformer is underway.
