Abstract

This study extends lifetime, magnetic moment and spin splitting measurements to rotational levels of over twelve K = 0 vibrational levels of the R $B_{2}$ state $CS_{2}$. The R state is the $B_{2}$ spin component of a $^{3}A_{2}$ electronic state. Lifetimes range from $8 \mu s$ for the (0, 7, 0) level to less than $1 \mu s$ for several higher lying levels which are closer to the V state from which R borrows oscillator strength. Magnetic moments behave regularly for lower levels, but become more erratic as the higher lying T and V states are approached. The magnetic moments arise from the rotational mixing of the R B2 and A1 spin components. Thus zero-field spin splittings are obtained from the magnetic moment measurements. Changes in these properties as vibrational energy increases reflect the increasing level density and perturbations.
