Abstract

The ground state of $CuCl_{2} (^{2}\Pi_{g})$ has been studied by laser induced fluorescence in a hot source. $CuCl_{2}$ was produced in a sealed quartz cell maintained at $\sim 700^{\circ}C$ (the vapour pressure being controlled by a side arm on the cell, kept at $550^{\circ}C$), and excited with a ring laser operating with DCM or Rhodamine 6G dye. Fluorescence in the region $11000 -- 15500 cm^{-1}$ was recorded on a Fourier transform spectrometer. Transitions to 35 vibrational levels of the $^{2}\Pi_{g}$ state have been observed, and are identified as vibrational progressions in the symmetric stretch ( $2\leq v_{1}^{\prime\prime} \leq 15$) occuring in combination with $v_{3}^{\prime\prime}$ (asymmetric stretch) = 0, 2, 4 or 6. Our analysis of the rotatioal and vibrational structure revealed in these spectra will be presented, together with a discussion of the energy level shifts observed among the different isotopomers of $CuCl_{2}$.
