Polarized luminescence excitation spectra absorption spectra and luminescence spectra of the uranyl ion ($UO 2++$) have been studied in glass matrices and as single crystals at room temperatures at $77\circ K$ and at $4\circ K$. The results quite definitely indicate that the lowest energy absorption band of $UO 2++$ consists of three distinct electronic transitions. Information on the species of these electronic states was also provided and will be discussed.
