Abstract
Polarized luminescence excitation spectra absorption spectra and luminescence spectra of the uranyl ion ($UO^{++}_{\ 2}$) have been studied in glass matrices and as single crystals at room temperatures at $77^{\circ}K$ and at $4^{\circ}K$. The results quite definitely indicate that the lowest energy absorption band of $UO^{++}_{\ 2}$ consists of three distinct electronic transitions. Information on the species of these electronic states was also provided and will be discussed.
