The poet Edith Sitwell sits reading a book with the words "Bard, Mard, Editt, the potes" written in reverse. The text "My Cup of Tea" appears as if spoken from Sitwell's mouth. It is the earliest example of a literary portrait by the artist, which references Sitwell's response to public denigration from Gertrude Stein by reading works from William Shakespeare along with her own poetry. One impression was subsequently cut into smaller sections and used as background elements in the gouache Self-Portrait, completed the same year, where the artist associates himself with this event.
