Abstract
My STEP project will be a four-week study abroad program through OSU to take an intensive language course in Dresden, Germany at the Goethe Institut. From June 3, 2019 – June 28, 2019, I will be responsible for attending classes every weekday where I will be given instruction in a small classroom setting about the German language and culture with other international students. I will be placed into a specific level program based on an entrance exam and a second exam at the end of the program which determines whether I have earned an internationally-recognized certificate of my language level. This certificate allows me to also earn credit at The Germanic Department at Ohio State towards my German major.
Studying at Goethe Institut is a transformational and academically rigorous program of this project as it allows me to immerse myself into new cultures and personally engage with a language that I have been studying for eight years. This program demands a great deal of personal growth as I have never traveled away from North America, by myself, to a country where English is not the primary spoken language. The other students and I will be able to collaborate to create weekend trips further enhancing what is learned in class, traveling to nearby cities, engaging in the lifestyle of a German student. I will be able to gain an understanding of many new countries by studying with other international students who all have different backgrounds unified by the desire to learn the German language.
