Abstract

While in vitro measurements of chlorophyll are the most accurate, in situ methods, which involve a handheld meter, are becoming of interest because they are quicker, cheaper, and do not require destructive sampling. The issue is that these meters only provide an index of chlorophyll and not the true chlorophyll concentration so models identifying the relationship between these two measurements must be made for each species. The aims of this study are to examine two invasive lianas species, Hedera helix and Euonymus fortunei, to (1) determine if a linear or non-linear model best fits the relationship between chlorophyll and a chlorophyll index (CCI) for these species and (2) quantify how chlorophyll differs between species and within species from different locations. It was found that E. fortunei mostly followed a non-linear relationship while H. helix followed a linear relationship. Euonymus fortunei showed signs that it could possibly be more plastic in chlorophyll concentrations across variable light environments than H. helix.
