Abstract
From 1939 to 1975, Francisco Franco ruled Spain as the head of an authoritarian dictatorship. Franco's regime took inspiration from Nazism and Italian Fascism and installed an extensive system of press censorship to control the Spanish political and cultural spheres. This thesis examines the Francoist censorship system and its effects on the print press in the Spanish region of Catalonia from 1938 to 1955. Drawing on sources in six languages and information from numerous Spanish periodicals, this thesis argues that the Francoist censorship system reveals a pattern of change that challenges traditional narratives about the evolution and cultural politics of Franco's regime.
