Abstract

The lowest $S^{*}\leftarrow S_{O}$ transition of p-chloroaniline has been observed at $4.2^\circ K$ in pure crystals and in mixed crystals. The dipole moment change on excitation has been measured from the splitting of the spectral lines in an electric field (linear Stark effect). Evidence of hindered rotation is found when biphenyl is used as a host crystal.
