Abstract

The well-known map of the Marietta Earthworks appearing in Squier and Davis' "Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley" has long been attributed to Col. Charles Whittlesey. A manuscript revision (never published) to Whittlesey's "Ancient Earth Forts of the Cuyahoga Valley (1871) indicates that the map was actually made by General Samuel R. Curtis.
