Abstract

This report is a detailed study describing the type and possible origins of the sulfur content of the Waynesburg (No. 11) seam in Belmont County. General discussion of the formation and different types of sulfur present in coal will be the first topic. Next, the geology and sulfur content of Ohio coal will be described followed by the same explanation of Belmont County. Finally, the geology and sulfur content of the Waynesburg coal seam will be covered. The geology in this part will include both a description of the overburden above the coal, and a petrographic study of a core sample taken from the coal. Several maps will accompany this report. These maps will show the percent sulfur content, ash content, and thicknesses of the Waynesburg (No. 11) coal in Belmont County. The explanations of these maps and the results from the study will be summarized at the end of the report.
