Abstract

Natural teeth luminesce bluish-white under ultraviolet radiation with three distinct luminescence peaks found at 360, 410, and 450 nm. Using laser excitation at 325 nm only peaks near 410 and 450 nm are observed. Hydroxyapatite has a similar though weaker luminescence as compared to natural teeth. Using pressed samples of hydroxyapatite changes in luminescence due to artificial demineralization of the apatite subsurface have been observed. A systematic decrease in luminescence is found with the increasing degree of apatite demineralization. These luminescence changes can be observed at a very early chemical stage. These results have important applications to clinical observations of dental caries and the remineralization processes found in vivo.""
