Abstract

The purpose of this research was to test the applicability of borehole radar methods to successfully monitor carbon plumes in deep saline aquifer formations post sequester and storage of CO2. To perform this test, various software programs were used to allow for the most accurate and realistic feedback possible. Many variables and geophysical properties needed to be obtained including magnetic permeability, conductivity, and permittivity values for each subsurface layer modeled, as well as formation thicknesses, saturation levels, porosity values, and permeability values that affect the electromagnetic properties of the units in question. The combination of these geophysical and intrinsic physical properties is accompanied by electrical properties of the brine fluid/supercritical CO2 solution.
