Abstract
Dr. Mary Elizabeth Fontana shares her experience as a Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at The Ohio State University. She moved to Columbus from Wilmington, Delaware, when her father, Mars G. Fontana, was hired as a professor of Metallurgical Research in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering. In her youth, she was interested in pursuing the research side of medicine; however, after working in a hospital during the summer before she began college, she realized she preferred work with more patient contact. She attended OSU for both undergraduate and medical school. After an internship in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Fontana returned to Ohio State for her residency and remained. Fontana discusses several roles she held, including her directorship of the Independent Study Program and her involvement in developing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training programs. She also discusses curriculum changes and her involvement with patients. Finally, she discusses endowments she’s created related to teaching and what she hopes her legacy will be.
