Abstract

Dr. J. Love Benton describes her experiences as an undergraduate at the University, beginning in the winter quarter of the 1997 school year. She describes her work as a member of the Afrikan Student Union, including her involvement in a sit-in at Bricker Hall in 1998 over the University administration's then-proposed changes for the Office of Minority Affairs, including the elimination of programs and staff positions. The student sit-in lasted eight days, the longest in University history, and resulted in the Administration putting a halt to the restructuring process and launching a national search for a new Vice Provost of Minority Affairs. Benton considers the sit-in a victory since it helped save jobs and retain important programs like the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center, and she remains proud of what she and other members of the Afrikan Student Union accomplished.
