Abstract

The emission spectra of dilute solutions of poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK), poly(N-ethy1-2-vinylcarbazole) and poly(N-ethyl-3-vinylcarbazole) have been investigated at temperatures ranging from well above room temperature down to the rigid glassy state at $77^{\circ} K$. In fluid solution all the vinyl polymers exhibit intrachain excimer emission which corresponds with that observed from appropriate model compounds such as 1,3-bis(N-carbazolyl) propane (1,3-BCP). The emission from PVK is seen to have additional unique features. Contrary to the other vinylcarbazole polymers and model compounds, no structured monomer-like emission is observed in fluid solution. Instead, a structureless emission band is observed which ties at energies intermediate to that of carbazolc monomer fluorescence and intrarco1ecutar excimer emission appropriate to 1,3-BCP. The intensity of this emission is strongly temperature dependent. Measurement of emission response functions using the time correlated single photon counting technique indicates that the temperature dependence of this band arises from a change in concentration of a particular polymer conformation. This state is not an intermediate for the production of the lower lying interchain excimer observed for PVK.
