Abstract
A relatively new spectroscopic source consisting of a beam of high velocity, unidirectional and monoenergetic atoms and ions that have been excited by a thin foil will be discussed. The source will be compared with other sources of spectroscopic interest to demonstrate the advantages that have been gained in its use for studies of basic properties of atoms and ions. Photoelectric and photographic diagnostic techniques that have been applied to the beam will be described and examples shown of the nature of the data acquired. The status of present experimental and theoretical problems will be outlined.
