Abstract

Infrared spectra of solid $VF_{3}$ in its anhydrous and hydrated forms were examined in the range $4000-30 cm^{-1}$. Raman spectra were obtained using laser excitation. The appearance of only two strong infrared bands in the anhydrous salt confirms the suggested hexa-coordination of the vanadium located inside an almost regular octahedron of fluorine atoms. Deuteration of the hydrated forms allowed the assignment of their much richer spectra. Structural changes induced by different amounts of hydration will be discussed.
