Abstract
The murder of Juan de Escobedo is infamous throughout the reign of Philip II of Spain. Even more infamous is the kings secretary of State, Antonio Perez, whom may have orchestrated the murder. From ambassadorial letters sent to Paris Ambassador to Spain, Juan de Vargas Mexia, from Antonio Perez one can learn a great deal about how the secretarial office worked, as well as the character of Perez. Through these letters the thesis attempts to decode the cipher Perez used in his missives to keep his dealings private. One folio in particular, folio 198, expresses Antonio Perez concerns about the rumors that had been spreading about him concerning the murder.
