Portrait of Nazi official Walther Funk. Text at the bottom reads "Walther Funk, studied law, economics, philosophy. Began as assistant to Goebbels. Minister of Economics. President of Reichsbank. 1938, drew laws which deprived Jews of wealth. Exempted from retail, wholesale trade, independent workshops, etc. Nuremberg: Life sentence for crimes against humanity. Released 1957 for ill health. Died 1960." A first-state impression [CMA 2001.034.210] has appliqué over "LL" in the word ill, possibly to cover lowercase letters with uppercase ones for increased legibility.
