Abstract

Within the classical path impact formalism, theoretical expressions are derived for the line shape and intensity of the R and P lines of the fundamental band of gaseous HD. These reflect the interplay between the allowed dipole moment and the dipole moments induced during binary collisions. The interference between the allowed and the induced dipoles, and between the dipoles induced in different collections, lead to a line shape which is a superposition of a Lorentzian and an anomalous dispersion profile in agreement with the experimental, results o Mckellar1.
