Abstract

Reactions of pulsed-laser evaporated Ti atoms with $H_{2}$ in a condensing argon stream gave $TiH, TiH_{2}, TiH_{3}, TiH_{4}$ and polymeric species. The main difference between pulsed layer and thermal evaporation Ti atom reactions is the observation of all four products directly after sample deposition and the appearance of the new TiH and $TiH_{3}$ radicals with laser evaporation. The assignments were baaed on concentration dependence and isotopic substitution and were confirmed by SCF frequency calculations. The stable $D_{3} h$ titanium trihydride radical was identified from agreement between calculated and observed values for the 8 active stretching frequencies for $TiH_{3}, TiH_{2}D, TiHD_{2}$ and $TiHD_{3}$. Both experiment and theoretical results show that reactions with H atoms play an important role in the reaction mechanism.
