Abstract

Thionylimide, HNSO, is formed by the reaction of $NH_{3}$ with $SOCl_{2}$ and $H_{2}O$ with NSF. The microwave spectrum of HNSO prepared by both of these reactions has been observed. In both instances, the observed spectrum was found to arise from the cis form, but the possibility of the formation of the trans form could not be excluded. From the observed spectrum of several isotopic species a tentative structure has been calculated: $d_{SN}=1.51_{2}{\AA}, d_{SO}=1.46_{s} {\AA}, d_{NH}=1.02 {\AA}, <HNS=115^{\circ}59^{\prime}$ and $<NSO=119_{40}^{\prime}$. The dipole moment, as calculated from the splittings of the rotational lines in an electric field, was found to be $0.91 \pm 0.03$ D.
