Abstract

Arsenic trichloride has some properties which differ from those of related halides. Water is soluble in it to a large extent without extensive hydrolysis occurring. The infrared and NMR spectra of water and heavy water in arsenic trichloride is similar to that observed for these compounds in the vapor state. These water solutions in arsenic trichloride should also produce the hydronium ion and we have found absorption bands which may be due to this ion. Acetone is arsenic trichloride also gives absorption bands similar to those of gaseous acetone.
