Abstract

A new multisurface matrix isolation apparatus has been designed for an IBM vacuum FTIR spectrometer. Forty five surfaces one inch by 0.35 inch are available for matrix isolation studies. A rotatable vacuum window interface permits both far and mid- infrared studies on the same sample. Two quartz crystal oscillators cooled to 10K permit a direct measure of matrix gas and reactant species molar ratios. Provision has also been made for mass spectrometric monitoring of the condensing beam. Studies of incorporation of reactive species into non volatile liquids is also possible. The design and performance of the apparatus will be discussed in detail.
